Each wizard gets an epithet, a craft name or a tower. Our epithets are our own: no colour-only titles.
How to use the wizard name generator
- Tap Generate for a council of wizards, each with an epithet (the Lamplit), a craft name (Runebinder) or a tower.
- Pick a Style: Arcane for grand, Latin-sounding names, Hedge for homely village conjurers, Star for astrologers and seers.
- Under More options, list epithets alone, show bare names, or set a gender, length or first letter.
- Star the names you like; favourites follow you to every other generator.
Names that sound like books
A wizard's name should sound as if it was written down long before it was spoken: on a spine, a door or a summons. The list on this page starts with Tadarin of the Drowned Spire, said tah-DAH-rin.
Wizards appear in legends, fairy tales and fantasy everywhere, and the most famous ones are firmly attached to their books. So every name here is invented by our own grammar, and well-known wizards from novels, films, games and legend are on our block list.
Arcane, hedge and star
- Arcane names are grand and Latin-sounding (Ald-, Val-, Oct- with -imus, -orus, -andra): court mages, tower scholars, examiners nobody wants to meet.
- Hedge names are short and homely (Bod-, Pell-, Nob- with -wick, -kin or -et): the village conjurer who finds lost goats and is better at magic than anyone suspects.
- Star names are bright and open (Cel-, Ori-, Lum- with -ion, -ara, -ys): astrologers, seers and the wizards who sleep in the day.
Stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable, and every name comes with a hint for saying it.
Epithets, craft names and towers
Wizards collect names. An epithet marks a reputation (the Ink-Stained, the Absent-Minded, the Unpaid); a craft name says what they do (Stormreader, Candlewarden, Quillcounter); a tower gives an address (of the Seventh Tower, of the Leaning Library). We deliberately left out colour-only epithets and the compounds that games and brands have made their own, so the epithets on this page are ours.

Writing wizards
- Let the epithet be earned, or ironic. The Fireproof is either a boast or a scar; the Mostly Careful would be a confession.
- Give apprentices short names. A hedge-style name for the apprentice and an arcane one for the master shows the gap at once, and closing it is a story.
- Make the tower a character. Of the Leaning Library says something about the wizard's housekeeping, and perhaps their politics.
At the table
Players meet many wizards, so give each one a single memorable hook. A craft name is the quickest: the party will call her the Stormreader long after they forget the rest. For a council or a college, generate fifty names with Arcane and pick one tower for all of them; the shared address makes them a faction.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good wizard name?
One that sounds old and bookish, with an epithet that tells a story. From this page's list, Cobet the Wandering and Tibander Bonetamer are two examples. Arcane names sound grand, Hedge names homely, Star names bright.
How do I give a wizard an epithet?
Name a habit, a scar or an achievement: the Ink-Stained, the Twice-Burned, the Far-Sighted. Choose Epithets only under More options for a list of epithets, craft names and towers.
What are some female wizard names?
Feminine names here end in -ia, -issa, -andra or -astra (arcane), -et or -elle (hedge) and -ara or -ys (star). Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female wizard names in the lists below.
Can I use these wizard names?
Yes, in any book, game, campaign or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check a trademark register before you name a product.
Why are there no colour epithets like a grey or white wizard?
Because the most famous colour titles belong to famous books. Our epithets describe habits, histories and towers instead, which also tell a reader more about the wizard.
