Each dragon gets a title, an epithet or a domain. Pick a style for one kind of dragon, or keep them mixed.
How to use the dragon name generator
- Tap Generate for a hoard of dragons, each with a title (the Ashen), an epithet (Cindercoil) or a domain (of the Glass Peaks).
- Choose a Style: Ancient for long, rolling names, Wyrm for heavy, guttural ones, Drake for quick names of one or two syllables.
- Under More options, show bare names or titles alone, or set a gender, a length or a first letter.
- Tap ☆ to keep a name; your favourites follow you to every generator on the site.
A name that fills a cave
A dragon's name is usually the first thing a story tells us about it, and often the only thing a village knows. It should sound old, heavy and a little hard to say, as if it was made for a mouth bigger than ours. The list on this page begins with Orvulynne the Sleepless, said or-VOO-lin.
Every name here comes from our own syllable grammar, written for this page. Dragons are shared by the myths of half the world, so no single book owns them, but famous named dragons from novels, films, games and myth are on our block list and never come out of the generator.
Ancient, wyrm and drake
- Ancient names are long and rolling, with open vowels and soft endings such as -aunith, -ysse or -oruun. They suit dragons who have slept under the same mountain for a thousand years and expect to be addressed properly.
- Wyrm names are blunt and guttural, built on gr, sk, kr and th, with endings like -ugor, -mok and -ath. They suit the cave-dwelling, cattle-stealing kind.
- Drake names are short, one or two quick syllables (-ssa, -x, -rr), for young dragons, small ones, or a dragon who was given a pet name by a rider.
The rules keep the sound clean: a group such as th, zh or x appears once, two of the same vowel never meet, and no part is used twice. The table below shows the parts each style draws from.
Titles, epithets and domains
Dragons rarely have family names. They have reputations. This generator gives each one a title (the Unburnt, the Thrice-Woken), an epithet that describes what it is or does (Saltmaw, Rimewarden), or a domain: the land it claims, from the Sunken Barrows to the Glass Peaks. No form takes more than four names in ten, so a list mixes all three. We left out plain colour titles and the mountain and hill pairs that famous stories have already made their own.

Writing a dragon
- Let the name arrive before the dragon. Have characters say it, avoid it or whisper it long before the creature appears. A name that people are afraid to use does half your work.
- Give the title a history. The Unburnt invites the question: who tried? A domain such as of the Drowned Mere suggests the land changed after the dragon took it.
- Match the name to the size. A drake with a seven-syllable ancient name is a joke (sometimes a good one); a great wyrm with a two-letter name feels wrong unless the story is about why.
At the table
Players remember a dragon by one hook. Give the full name once, when it matters, and let the table use the title after that. If several dragons share a world, give each style a region: ancient names in the old mountains, wyrm names in the marshes and caves, drakes wherever people keep them. A dragon that introduces itself by its full name and three titles is a dragon that wants to talk, which can be more dangerous than one that doesn't.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good dragon name?
One that sounds old and heavy and carries a hint of the dragon's nature. From this page's list, Vaelossa the Last and Kromamdun of the Weeping Vault are two examples. Switch between Ancient, Wyrm and Drake to change the sound.
What are some female dragon names?
Feminine dragon names here end in -ysse, -aunith, -imora, -ethra or, for drakes, -ssa and -sha. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female dragon names in the lists below. Many dragons in stories have no gender at all, so Neutral gives names with endings such as -yth and -esk.
How do I give a dragon a title?
Name it after what it survived, what it did or what it rules: the Unburnt, Cindercoil, of the Glass Peaks. Choose Titles only under More options for a list of titles and epithets to pick from.
Can I use these dragon names?
Yes, in any book, game, campaign or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names. If you plan to name a product or brand, check a trademark register first.
Are these dragons from a book or game?
No. The syllables, titles and domains are written by us. Famous dragons from novels, films, games and myth are on our block list, so the generator never gives you one by accident.
