How to use the halfling name generator
- Tap Generate for a list of halfling names with family names.
- Pick the hearth style for short, everyday names or gentry for the longer names of old landed families.
- Choose feminine, masculine or neutral names; under More options drop the family name, list family names alone, or pick a first letter.
- Save the ones you like with ☆, then copy or export them for your notes.
Homely names for small folk
Halfling names should sound like home: a warm kitchen, a full larder, a village where everyone knows everyone. Our halfling grammar is built like old English country nicknames, short and soft, with a beginning such as Cob-, Tam-, Pip- or Nell- and an ending such as -o, -y, -kin, -ie or -etta. Stress falls on the first syllable, as it does in most nicknames. This page's list opens with Semel of Oat Hall (SEH-mel).
Names stay between three and nine letters. Rules stop awkward joins (no -ckb-, no stray -sr-) and limit w, y and ll to once per name, so a name never turns into a tongue-twister.
Hearth and gentry
- Hearth names are the everyday ones: two syllables, quick to call across a field. Tam, Cobby, Nellie and their cousins.
- Gentry names belong to the families with a hall, a library and an opinion about everybody else's manners: longer, more formal names ending in -ina, -ella, -ard, -ric or -ibald.
The difference is useful in a story. A gentry halfling who insists on their full name and a hearth halfling who has never been called anything but a nickname make a natural pair.
Family names
Halfling families take comfortable compounds of a food, plant or household word and a homely place word (a mead, a brook, a kettle, a barrel), of the something Kin for close clans, a hall for the gentry, or a village with an -end, -green or -lane. We kept away from the -foot and -buck style made famous by one very well-known series of novels, so your halflings sound like your own.

Writing halflings
- Name the village too. A halfling's family name often points at a place; decide what that place is like, and the character has a home to miss.
- Contrast is your friend. A homely name on an adventurer, a sharp-tongued gentry name on a cook. Readers notice when a name and a life don't match.
- Give the family a habit. If every Applemead is a baker, the one who became a sailor has a story the family talks about at every meal.
At the table
Halfling names are a gift for game masters because they sound friendly at once. When the party reaches a halfling village, prepare five family names and reuse them for every shopkeeper, farmer and gossip: by the third Barleywhistle the players will be asking how they are all related. A gentry name or two at the top of the village gives you a mayor and a mystery for free.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good halfling name?
Something short and warm with a cosy family name behind it. From this page's list, Tamora of Meadowbottom and Meris of Teasel Hall are two examples; switch to the gentry style for longer, grander names.
What are some female halfling names?
Feminine halfling names here end in -a, -ie, -etta, -ina, -bell or -wen in the hearth style, and -ina, -ella, -issa or -anda among the gentry. Set Gender to Feminine or browse the female names below.
What are good halfling last names?
Compounds of something you might find in a country kitchen or garden and a homely place word work best: a fruit or herb plus a brook, field, kettle or barrel. Choose Family name only under More options to list them by themselves.
Can I use these halfling names?
Yes, for your novel, campaign, game or commercial work, at no cost and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check trademarks before naming a product.
Are halflings the same as the little folk from famous novels?
They grew out of the same tradition, but halflings in tabletop games are their own people, and halfling is one of the nine species in the SRD 5.2 open rules text. Our names avoid the novels' naming patterns, and names printed in published game books are blocked.
