Names with something to prove
Half-orcs in fantasy often live between two peoples who don't fully accept them, and their names show it. One raised in an orc camp carries a blunt orcish name; one raised in a human village gets a plain human one; and some wear a name that is visibly half of each. Every name in a mixed list here says which:
- Orcish + human: an orcish given name with a human family name.
- Human + orcish: a human given name with an orcish deed-name or clan epithet.
- Blended: a given name built from both sounds, with a family name from either side.
The list on this page begins with Kraglind Rotear (Blended).
How the blend works
Our blended grammar uses parts of our orc and human grammars. One half sets a human beginning before an orcish ending: Bram- with -ak, Wil- with -ash, Hal- with -sha. The other half sets an orcish beginning before a human ending: Grak- with -mund, Maz- with -ric, Urg- with -hild. The rules of both grammars still apply: no doubled vowels, no doubled consonants such as kk at a join, and a few harsh clusters that look like typos (-lrg-, -krg-) are not allowed at all.
Orcish names here come from our orc grammar in both its harsh and clan styles; human names come from all three of our human regions.
Deed-names and family names
From the orcish side a half-orc may carry a deed-name, a compound earned by doing something hard to forget (Tuskbreaker, Ashgnasher), or a clan epithet such as of the Broken Tusk. From the human side they get an ordinary family name or the name of a town. A half-orc with a gentle human name and a fearsome deed-name, or the other way round, is a character in four words.
How half-orc names are put together
| Given name | Family name | Parts | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orcish (our orc grammar) | Human | Orcish given name + a human family name | Murzimba of House Belard, Muzunda Ridgegate, Urgadak of House Lanewick |
| Human (our human grammar) | Orcish | Human given name + an orcish deed-name or clan | Gulniar Scareye, Iolon of the Bone Marches, Tavia of the Scarred Moon |
| Blended: human beginning | Either | Al-, Cal-, Gar-, Hrol-, Mar- + orcish endings -a, -sha, -ish, -ma, -gra | Wilog, Balar, Haldak |
| Blended: orcish beginning | Either | Az-, Ghaz-, Gro-, Kruz-, Mog- + human endings -hild, -gard, -dis, -wen, -ith | Haskalind, Skarun, Thrakey |
Examples are generated at build time with fixed seeds by this page's own generator, so they follow the same rules as the tool.

Writing half-orcs
- Let the name be a choice. A half-orc who uses an orcish name in a human city is making a statement, and so is one who hides it.
- Make the deed-name a question. Who gave it, and was it deserved? A gentle character with a brutal deed-name is a mystery readers will want solved.
- Avoid easy villainy. Half-orcs have been written as brutes for decades. A name that blends both sides is a quick signal that this character is more than that.
At the table
Ask a half-orc player which parent named their character, and why. Then generate a mixed list and look at the notes together: the answer usually points straight at one kind of name. If the character has a deed-name, let the player tell the story behind it the first time someone asks.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good half-orc name?
A short, strong given name with a family name or deed-name that hints at the other parent. From this page's list, Durbuzak Brackford and Rughatha Hawkford are two examples. Try Blended for names that are half of each.
Do half-orcs have orc names or human names?
Either. It usually depends on who raised them, and many use different names among different people. This generator gives both kinds and blended names, each with a family name from the other side.
What are some female half-orc names?
Set Gender to Feminine: orcish names end in -a, -sha, -ka or -rga, human ones in -hild, -wen or -a, and blended names mix the two. Browse the female names in the lists below.
Can I use these half-orc names?
Yes, for any campaign, novel, game or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check trademarks before naming a product after one.
Is the half-orc in the open rules?
The half-orc appears in the SRD 5.1, an earlier version of the open rules text released under CC-BY-4.0, and was dropped from the SRD 5.2. We use only the idea of the people; every name and word here is ours. The attribution is on our About page.
