The form is political: a kingdom, a realm, an empire or a league of free cities. Roots are invented.
How to use the kingdom name generator
- Tap Generate. You will see Kingdom of …, … Realm, … Empire, Free Cities of … and, in a mixed list, an adjective plus a root.
- Set Kind when you already know the government. Free cities is for leagues and city-states, not for a single throne.
- A starting letter is under More options.
- Star the name you will write at the top of the map. Favourites carry over to the town, city and character tools.
The form is the politics
A kingdom, a realm, an empire and a league of free cities are not synonyms. The word tells the reader who is allowed to give an order. This generator puts that word in the name on purpose. The list begins with Pelquin League.
The root is an invented word, not a country and not a world from a novel or a game. Those are blocked. Around the root, the pattern is the constitution: Kingdom of, Realm of, Empire, Free Cities of, League, or a plain adjective-plus-root for a land people name the way they name a season.
Which kind to pick
- Kingdom. Kingdom of … or … Kingdom. One crown, or a crown that claims to be the only one. Good for the home country of a story.
- Realm. Realm of … or … Realm. Slightly older and less administrative. Use it for a land defined by a people or a vow rather than a tax office.
- Empire. … Empire or Empire of …. More than one people under one centre. The name should sound like a claim.
- Free cities. Free Cities of …, … League, or an adjective with the root. No single sovereign. The cities inside it should then be named on the city page, and they should not all repeat the league's root unless they are colonies.
A mixed list is useful when you are still deciding. Once you know, lock the kind. An empire and a league should not wear the same pattern or the reader will not know who kneels.
Keeping the map honest
The kingdom name is the large type. Towns and cities inside it should look related to each other and slightly plainer than the realm. If every village is Kingdom of something, the word kingdom stops meaning anything.
Empires can hold more than one naming tradition: the capital in the imperial pattern, the conquered coast still using its old town endings, the free cities on the border refusing both. That contrast is the history. Generate each layer with the matching tool instead of forcing one grammar to do every job.
How kingdom names are built
| Kind | How a name is built | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Kingdom | Kingdom of …, or … Kingdom | Kingdom of Pellian, Selvara Kingdom, Ganneth Kingdom, Zulkara Kingdom |
| Realm | Realm of …, or … Realm | Realm of Relvyn, Dorrath Realm, Wellian Realm, Drennil Realm |
| Empire | … Empire, or Empire of … | Torvyn Empire, Empire of Farrath, Dravena Empire, Zarrath Empire |
| Free cities | Free Cities of …, … League, or an adjective plus the root | Free Cities of Kethra, Rorveth League, Free Cities of Quessara, Sarrath League |
Roots are invented. Real countries and famous fictional worlds are rejected and never shown here.

In prose
- Use the short form in dialogue. People say the root, or "the League", not the full official name, unless they are being formal or afraid.
- Let the adjective be a reputation. Broken, Outer, Ashen should be true of the place, or ironically untrue.
- Do not stack titles. Empire of the Kingdom of … is a diagram, not a name.
For a game
Decide the form before the first session and write it on the map in the same words the generator uses. Players remember "the free cities" faster than they remember a root. The root is for treaties, coins and the one NPC who is a pedant.
Frequently asked questions
How do you name a fantasy kingdom?
Pick the kind of state first, then a root you can say. Kingdom, realm, empire and free cities are different promises to the reader. Irvyn Realm and Dravena Banner show two forms from this page.
What is the difference between a kingdom, a realm and an empire?
Here it is the pattern and the scale you intend. A kingdom is one crown. A realm is a land people name as a whole. An empire is a claim over more than one people. The generator will not invent the politics for you; it will keep the wording consistent once you choose.
Can I name free cities?
Set Kind to Free cities. You get Free Cities of …, a League, or a two-word land name. Name the member cities separately so each one sounds like a city, not like a smaller copy of the league.
Can I use these kingdom names?
Yes. Books, games, campaigns and commercial projects may use them free, with no credit required. We claim no ownership of a generated name. Search trademarks before you use one as a product name, and do not present a real country under a thin disguise.
Are real countries filtered out?
Yes. Country names and famous fictional worlds are rejected as a whole name and as a word inside a longer name. The roots themselves are not taken from a map.
