Export list
Four moods to pick from: soft, dark, whimsical or regal.
How to use the OC name generator
- Pick an aesthetic: soft, dark, whimsical or regal. On Any, each name is labelled with its mood.
- Choose feminine, masculine or neutral names, or leave it on Any.
- Tap Generate. The nickname in quotes is either a short form of the name or a word that suits the mood; switch it off under More options.
- Star the names you love. Your favourites stay in this browser and can be exported as a text or CSV file.
What an OC name needs
An original character lives in more places than a novel's cast: in art, roleplay threads, commissions and fan communities. That gives the name extra jobs. It should be easy to recognise in a tag, easy to search for, unusual enough that it isn't someone else's character, and it should carry the character's mood before anyone has seen a drawing. A nickname matters too: friends, rivals and fans will need something short to call them.
This page's list starts with Nhilae “Nhi” Ironblade and Mezariss “Shade” of House Ithys.
Four aesthetics
Each aesthetic draws given names from a different mix of our grammars, so the sound changes with the mood.
- Soft names come from our fae, high-elf, halfling and coastal grammars: open vowels, l, w and gentle endings.
- Dark names come from our infernal, dark-elf, tiefling and northern grammars: harder stops, z, x and th.
- Whimsical names come from our gnome, fae and halfling grammars: bouncy syllables and playful endings.
- Regal names come from our high-elf, southern, draconic and tiefling grammars: long, formal and a little grand.
All four pair the given name with a family name from the same culture.
Nicknames
Half the nicknames are clipped from the name itself, the way people shorten names in real life: a three-syllable name loses its ending, sometimes with a friendly -y or -ie. The other half are words that suit the aesthetic: a soft character might be called Wren or Clover, a dark one Hex or Cinder, a whimsical one Biscuit. A nickname that has nothing to do with the real name is a story waiting to be told: who gave it, and why does it stick?
The four aesthetics
| Aesthetic | Name sources | Nickname style | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soft | Fae, high elf, halfling, coastal human | Moth, Wren, Clover, Honey | Lysiel of Mistring, Fenle of the Moonlit Court |
| Dark | Infernal, dark elf, tiefling, northern human | Hex, Rook, Cinder, Ink | Azria of the House of Belephor, Malaix Sulphursmile |
| Whimsical | Gnome, fae, halfling | Biscuit, Pickle, Noodle, Sprout | Wobetta of the Wobble Workshop, Mabinim of Spindledelve |
| Regal | High elf, southern human, dragonborn, tiefling | Sable, Laurel, Sterling, Gilt | Tavelo of Halminster, Casaina of House Selond |
Examples are generated at build time; on the page the generator adds a nickname in quotes.

Tips for naming an OC
- Search it first. Put the name into a search engine and the art sites you use. If another popular character already has it, pick another, or your OC's tag will fill with someone else's art.
- Pick a tag you can keep. Once people know your character, changing the name is hard. Choose a spelling you are happy to type a thousand times.
- Let the name carry contrast. A soft name on a fierce character, or a regal name on someone who grew up with nothing, makes people curious.
- Write the pronunciation down. Add the hint from the list to your character sheet so commissioners and roleplay partners say it the way you do.
For roleplay and fandom spaces
Original characters often join an existing world. If your OC belongs to a fan setting, generate in the mood that matches that world, then check the name doesn't belong to a canon character: our generators block well-known names from major book, film and game series, but no list covers every fandom. For a completely original world, try the Fantasy Name Generator for whole peoples and families.
Frequently asked questions
What is an OC?
OC stands for "original character": a character you created yourself, rather than one taken from an existing book, show or game. OCs appear in art, fan fiction, roleplay and original stories.
How do I name my OC?
Decide the mood first, then generate names in that aesthetic and read them aloud. Keep two or three, search them online, and imagine other characters calling your OC by the nickname. The one that still feels right a day later is usually the one.
Can my OC have a gender-neutral name?
Yes. Set Gender to Neutral for names built from endings that our grammars don't tie to either gender. You can also take any name you like: plenty of names cross over in real life.
Can I use these names for my OC online or in commissions?
Yes, freely, including in paid commissions, comics and games. Names are generated and we claim no rights in them. If you later sell merchandise under the name, check that it isn't a registered trademark.
Are any of these names from existing fandoms?
Not on purpose: everything is built from our own syllables and word lists, and each name is checked against a list of famous characters from major series, which are never shown. Do a quick search anyway, especially for niche fandoms.
