Old-world names are real historical names, marked historical; gothic names are invented. Each gets a house, a title or an epithet.

How to use the vampire name generator

  1. Tap Generate for a mix of old-world and gothic vampires, each with a house, a family name, an epithet or a title such as Countess.
  2. Set Style to Old-world for real historical names or Gothic for invented ones, and Gender to feminine or masculine.
  3. Under More options, show bare names, list house names alone, or choose a length or first letter.
  4. Star the best ones; favourites stay with you across every generator on the site.

Old blood, old names

The vampire of folklore comes from the villages of central and eastern Europe, and the vampire of the novel is usually an aristocrat who has outlived everyone who knew their name. Both ideas meet in this generator. The list on this page begins with Count Ondrej Moresk.

Old-world names are real given names from the Slavonic, Hungarian, Bohemian, Polish and Wallachian traditions, chosen by us from Charlotte M. Yonge's History of Christian Names (1884, now in the public domain): Ludmilla, Zorislava and Dragomira, Boleslav, Ottokar and Vratislav. They are marked historical in the list. We left out every name that points at a famous fictional vampire, an actor or a living politician.

Gothic names

Gothic names are invented by our own grammar: velvety beginnings with v, l and s (Ves-, Sil-, Cor-) and Latin- or French-sounding endings such as -ius, -elle, -ine and -aud. They suit vampires who have reinvented themselves more than once and chose a name that sounds like a portrait in a gallery. Invented names come with a hint for saying them; real names don't, because an English respelling would get them wrong.

Houses, titles and epithets

Every vampire here gets one of four bynames: of House and an invented old-world family word (of House Moranyi), the same word as a plain family name, an epithet for an unnatural life (the Unaging, the Mirrorless, the Candle-Shy), or a rank before the name that matches its gender: Countess, Baroness, Margravine, Count, Baron, Margrave. No byname takes more than four names in ten. Choose Houses only for a list of noble houses for your setting.

Writing vampires

  • Let the name show the age. A real old-world name places a vampire in a century; a gothic one suggests someone who has been reinventing themselves ever since.
  • Use the house as a cast list. One house name can cover a sire and every vampire they turned, which tells readers who owes loyalty to whom.
  • Make the epithet a clue. The Mirrorless or the Candle-Shy hints at a weakness without spelling it out.

At the table

A vampire introduced with a title is announcing their rank in a hierarchy, so let the players learn the hierarchy through names. Give the elder a title and a house, their followers only the house, and the newly turned only a first name. When the party meets a Countess with no house, they should wonder what happened to it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good vampire name?

One that sounds old and elegant with something cold underneath. From this page's list, Mireric of House Nemiova and Margrave Moricz Lubancz are two examples. Old-world names give real historical weight; gothic names sound invented on purpose.

Where do the old-world names come from?

From a historical name dictionary in the public domain: Charlotte M. Yonge's History of Christian Names (1884). We chose Slavonic, Hungarian, Bohemian, Polish and Wallachian given names from it and spell them as she printed them. They are real names, so they are marked historical.

What are some female vampire names?

Set Gender to Feminine for names such as Zorislava, Ludmilla or Kasimira from the old-world list, or invented gothic names ending in -elle, -ine or -ora. The female vampire names in the lists below are a good start.

Can I use these vampire names?

Yes, in any story, game or commercial project, free and without credit. Historical given names belong to everyone, and we claim no rights in the invented ones. Check a trademark register before naming a product or brand.

Are these vampires from a book, film or show?

No. Houses, titles and gothic names are written by us, and famous fictional vampires and their families are on our block list, so the generator won't hand you one.
