How to use the dragonborn name generator
- Tap Generate for dragonborn names with a clan name.
- Pick feminine, masculine or neutral names, or keep the gender on Any.
- Under More options, add a childhood name instead of a clan name, show given names only, or list clan names alone.
- Star the names you like and copy the pronunciation hint, since draconic names reward being said aloud.
Draconic naming conventions
Dragonborn names should sound as if a dragon could say them: strong consonants, breathy and hissing sounds (rh, sh, kh, x) and open vowels. Our grammar builds given names of two or three syllables from beginnings such as Kal-, Thar-, Var- and Ix-, with endings that lean feminine (-ra, -isha, -ith), masculine (-ash, -ax, -oth) or neutral (-esh, -yx, -un). Only one vowel stands at a time, so the names stay crisp.
This page's list opens with Kalra Qorxirith, said KAL-rah.
Clan names
In many settings a dragonborn's clan comes first: honour belongs to the clan, and the clan name is said with weight. Our clan names are invented words of three or four syllables, longer and more rolling than given names, so the difference is audible. Formal address can put the clan first; in everyday speech most people will use the given name alone.
Childhood names
Many players like the idea of a childhood name: a nickname given young, sometimes kept for life. Ours are plain English words in quotes, either a single word or two joined together, the kind of thing a sibling calls you. They make a handy shorthand at the table and a gentle contrast with a fierce given name. None of the childhood names printed in published rulebooks is used.

Tips for writing dragonborn
- Let the clan carry honour. A dragonborn who has shamed their clan might refuse to say its name, or be refused it. That is a backstory in one line.
- Use the childhood name for intimacy. Only family and old friends use it. When a stranger knows it, something is wrong.
- Keep given names short. The clan name already brings length and weight; a short given name balances it.
At the table
Draconic names can be hard to catch the first time. Say the name and the clan slowly at introductions, then let the table settle on the given name or the childhood name for everyday play. If your setting gives dragonborn a draconic ancestry, a colour or element can inspire the childhood name: a nickname about smoke or sparks for a fire-blooded character, for example.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good dragonborn name?
A short, strong given name with a hiss or a breath in it, and a longer clan name behind it. From this page, Orzuliss Ghareseniss and Aress Drakarith are two examples to start from.
What are some female dragonborn names?
Feminine dragonborn names here end in -ra, -ira, -isha, -ith, -ava and similar endings. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female names in the lists below.
What is a dragonborn childhood name?
A nickname given in childhood, often a plain word or two, kept by family and close friends. Choose Childhood name under More options to get names with one.
Can I use these dragonborn names?
Yes, in any campaign, story or commercial project, at no cost. We claim no rights in generated names; check trademarks before naming a product after one.
Are these the dragonborn names from the rulebooks?
No. Our syllables, clan names and childhood names are written by us, and the example names printed in published rulebooks are blocked. Dragonborn is one of the nine species in the SRD 5.2, which is open under CC-BY-4.0; see our About page.
