Orc naming conventions
Orc names in most fantasy are short, harsh and easy to bellow across a battlefield. Our orc grammar uses blunt beginnings (Grak-, Maz-, Skar-, Urg-), closed vowels and endings that land hard: -ak, -uk, -og and -ash for men, -a, -sha, -ka and -rga for women. Names run from three to eight letters, with only one vowel at a time.
To keep them rough without sounding like nonsense, the grammar limits each name to one gr, one kr and one z, and stops endings such as -ug repeating inside a name. This page's list begins with Ghazuk Irongouger (GAH-zuk).
Harsh and clan styles
- Harsh names are one or two blunt syllables, the names of raiders and pit-fighters, followed by a deed-name.
- Clan names are slightly longer, with aspirated sounds such as gh and kh, and come with a clan epithet: of the plus an adjective and a noun, or the wild land the clan comes from.
Neither style tries to copy the orcs of any particular book or game. Clan names used by a well-known game series are blocked, so your warband's banner is your own.
Deed-names and clan epithets
A deed-name is earned: a body word or a beast joined to a deed, like the name of someone who once broke something important. A clan epithet belongs to the whole clan and is worn with pride. Orcs here can carry either, which gives you a quick way to show rank: young orcs with only a clan, veterans with a deed-name of their own.

Tips for writing orcs
- Give orcs culture, not just noise. A clan epithet hints at history, a deed-name at honour. Orcs who care about their names are more interesting than a horde of grunts.
- Vary the length. A list where every name is one syllable reads like a drum. Mix harsh and clan styles in one warband.
- Mind the sounds. Harsh sounds can slide into real-world words or slurs. Our blocklist removes offensive results, but always read your final list aloud.
At the table
Orc names are great for improvised encounters because players remember them. Name the warband leader with a deed-name and a clan, give the lieutenants clan names only, and let the rank-and-file stay nameless. When the players capture the lieutenant, they will finally learn what the leader's deed-name means.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good orc name?
A short, hard name that's easy to shout, followed by a deed-name or a clan epithet. From this page's list, Grakish Rotmaw and Zugubath Bloodchewer are two examples. Switch to the clan style for longer names.
What are some female orc names?
Feminine orc names here end in -a, -sha, -ka, -rga and similar endings, and they come with the same epithets as the men's. Set Gender to Feminine or browse the female orc names below.
How do orc clan names work?
Here, a clan epithet follows "of the" with an adjective and a noun, or names the land the clan comes from. A deed-name is personal and earned. Choose Epithet only under More options to list them alone.
Can I use these orc names?
Yes. Use them in any game, story or commercial project, free of charge; we claim no rights in generated names. Check trademark registers before using one as a brand.
Are these orcs from a particular game?
No. Our syllables and epithets are our own, and well-known orc names and clan names from books and games are blocked, so the generator won't hand you one.
