Each fairy gets a court, a family name or a home. Choose Courts only under More options to name the courts themselves.
How to use the fairy name generator
- Tap Generate for a ring of fairies, each with a court (of the Lantern Court), a family name or a home.
- Pick a Style: Blossom for meadow-flower names, Woodland for moss, fern and hedgerow, Moonlit for moths, mist and dusk.
- Under More options, list courts alone, show bare names, or choose a gender, length or first letter.
- Star the names you love; favourites follow you to every generator on the site.
Names grown, not made
The fair folk of old stories took their names from the places they haunted: the hawthorn, the barrow, the mist on the water. This generator does the same. Each name begins with a piece of nature (a flower, a tree, a moth) and ends in a light fae sound. The list on this page begins with Popion Mistdown, said POH-pee-on.
The beginnings are written for this page; the endings come from the fae grammar our fantasy name generator uses, so a fairy here would not sound out of place in a fantasy cast. Fairies from books, films and plays are on our block list.
Blossom, woodland and moonlit
- Blossom fairies take their names from meadow flowers: Lil-, Prim-, Tans-, Lav-, Clo-. They suit the bright, quick, easily offended kind.
- Woodland fairies come from moss, fern and hedgerow: Fern-, Moss-, Wren-, Bram-, Sorb-. They suit guardians, tricksters and anyone who lives under a root.
- Moonlit fairies belong to moths, mist and dusk: Moth-, Mist-, Vesp-, Nox-, Twil-. They suit the fair folk you should not thank.
Endings carry the gender: -wen, -elle or -ella for feminine names, -wick, -orn or -bryn for masculine ones, -wisp or -ling for neutral ones.
Courts, families and homes
Fairies in folklore belong somewhere. A court names the company they keep (of the Hawthorn Court, of the Lantern Court), a family name joins two hedgerow words (Thistlekiss, Mossglimmer), and a home names a hollow or a ring (of Brambledell, of Sloering). Choose Courts only for court names on their own, from The Mushroom Court to The Court of Falling Leaves.

Writing fairies
- Let the name be a clue. A fairy named for a moth will come to a lantern; one named for a thistle will not be pleasant to hold.
- Keep true names secret. In many tales knowing a fairy's real name gives power over it, so give your fairy a public name from the list and keep another in reserve.
- Use the court for politics. Two courts named for different seasons or flowers are enough for a quarrel that has lasted three hundred years.
At the table
Fairies make memorable, unpredictable encounters. Introduce the court before the fairy, through a ring of mushrooms or a bargain someone already regrets. When a player asks a fairy's name, give the first half and let them earn the rest. A list of twenty names from one style is enough for a whole fairy market.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good fairy name?
A light, quick name with a piece of nature in it, such as Tansis Larktumble or Lavrin of Nettlemeadow from this page's list. Pick a style to choose between flowers, woods and moonlight.
What are fairy courts?
In folklore the fair folk gather in courts, companies with their own rulers, customs and quarrels. Our court names come from plants, seasons, hours and lights; choose Courts only under More options for a list.
What are some fairy names for a girl?
Set Gender to Feminine for names ending in -wen, -elle, -ella or -bell, built on flowers, ferns or moths. The female fairy names in the lists below are a good start.
Can I use these fairy names?
Yes, in any story, game or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check a trademark register before naming a product or brand after one.
Are these fairies from a book or film?
No. The names, courts and homes are our own, and well-known fairies from books, films and plays are on our block list, so the generator won't give you one.
