Each werewolf gets a pack, a byname or a title. Choose Pack names only under More options to name the packs themselves.
How to use the werewolf name generator
- Tap Generate for a pack of werewolves, each with a pack (of the Rimefang Pack), a byname (Rustpelt) or a title.
- Pick a Style: Feral for short, rough names, Old blood for longer names from werewolf families with a long memory.
- Under More options, list pack names alone, show bare names, or set a gender, length or first letter.
- Star the names you like; favourites follow you to the other generators.
Two lives, one name
A werewolf lives two lives, and the best werewolf names work in both: plain enough to belong to a neighbour, rough enough to be shouted across a moonlit field. The list on this page begins with Yorruth Sootear, said YOR-ruth.
The shape-shifting wolf appears in folklore across Europe and beyond, so it belongs to no single story. Every name, pack and byname here is written by us, and werewolves and wolves from novels, films, TV and myth are on our block list.
Feral and old blood
- Feral names are one or two syllables you can growl: Rask, Torv, Gav and Kurr at the start, -ek, -ar or -ka at the end. They suit the newly turned, the outcasts and the ones who have stopped pretending.
- Old blood names have a Germanic ring: Ulv-, Sig-, Hild- and Brun- with endings such as -ulf, -wald, -hild and -run. They suit werewolf families who keep records, rules and grudges going back generations.
Stress falls on the first syllable in both styles, and each name comes with a hint for saying it.
Packs, bynames and titles
A werewolf's second name says where they belong. A pack name joins two words (of the Rimefang Pack, of the Ashjaw Pack); a byname is what others call them for their looks or habits (Rustpelt, Tatterfoot, Moonjaw); a title marks a reputation (the Twice-Bitten, the Half-Tamed). For a whole territory, Pack names only gives names such as The Pack of the Hungry Moon or The Thornmere Pack.

Writing werewolves
- Give the human name and the wolf name a relationship. A character called Gerwin by day and Scarjaw by night is two people; one who answers to both has made peace with it.
- Let packs name places. The Bleakfell Pack tells readers where they hunt; the Pack of the Drowned Wood suggests a story behind the name.
- Use titles for turning points. The First-Turned and the Last are characters with a past, and a future the reader will want to see.
At the table
Werewolf packs make excellent recurring factions. Name the pack before the players meet any of its members and let the name do the foreshadowing. Give the alpha a title, the lieutenants bynames and the rest plain names, and when one of the plain-named wolves earns a byname in play, the players will notice.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good werewolf name?
Short and rough, or old and proud, with a pack or a byname behind it. From this page's list, Raskulunna of the Saltridge Pack and Sigwin Embertail are two examples.
How do I name a werewolf pack?
Join a hard landscape word to a wolf word (Rimefang, Ashjaw), or name the pack after a moon or a place: the Pack of the Hungry Moon. Choose Pack names only under More options for a full list.
What are some female werewolf names?
Feminine names here end in -ka, -ra, -ya or, in the old-blood style, -hild, -run and -lind. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female werewolf names in the lists below.
Can I use these werewolf names?
Yes, for books, games, campaigns and commercial projects, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check a trademark register before you name a product.
Are these from a famous werewolf story?
No. The names, packs and bynames are our own, and well-known werewolves and wolves from fiction and myth are blocked, so you won't get one by chance.
