Dwarven naming conventions

Dwarves are short-spoken in most fantasy, and so are their names: one or two syllables, hard consonants and the stress on the first syllable. Our dwarf grammar starts with solid beginnings (Bram-, Hal-, Thra-, Brok-) and closes with endings that say the gender: -in, -ar, -rim and -dur for men, -hild, -dis, -run and -a for women. Names stay between three and eight letters.

Two rules fix the faults of careless generators. Neighbouring parts may not echo each other, so you won't get a doubled sound such as a -nor after a Thor-. And name parts that would point at a famous dwarf from fiction are blocked. This page's list begins with Dunabera of Clan Gremumek (DOO-nah-beh-rah).

Mountain and deep dwarves

  • Mountain dwarves have names that sound Germanic or Norse: Bram, Hjal, Sig and endings such as -grim, -mund and -hild. They are the dwarves of high halls and trade roads.
  • Deep dwarves have darker, heavier names with kh, zh and gr, endings such as -dun and -azh, and more often carry a clan name than a craft.

Neither style has paired vowels: dwarven names here use one vowel at a time, which keeps them short and hard.

Clan names and craft surnames

A dwarf's family name usually comes in one of two forms here. A craft compound joins a stone or metal word to a craft or body word, the kind of name that sounds earned at the forge. A clan name follows of Clan, an invented word for the kin group a dwarf answers to. Each element is limited per list, so one metal won't appear in three names out of six. Deep dwarves may also give the hold they come from.

Tips for writing dwarves

  • Let the clan speak first. In many dwarven cultures the clan matters more than the person. Have strangers ask a dwarf's clan before their name, and the culture comes through without exposition.
  • Give women real names. Fiction has often treated dwarf women as an afterthought. Our feminine endings are as strong as the masculine ones; use them.
  • Make crafts mean something. A craft surname tells you what an ancestor did. A dwarf who carries a smith's name but can't hold a hammer has a story in it.

At the table

Dwarven names are easy to say, so they make good quick names for non-player characters. Keep a short list of clan names for each hold in your world and reuse them: when the party meets their third member of the same clan, the players will start to recognise the family, and you will have built a world without a single page of lore.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good dwarf name?

One or two syllables, a hard sound and a clan or craft surname behind it. From this page, Barodis of Clan Durimir and Rukindis of Clan Durgrund show the range. The deep style gives heavier, darker names.

What are some female dwarf names?

Feminine dwarf names here end in -hild, -dis, -run, -grid, -a and similar endings. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female dwarf names in the lists below.

How do dwarven clan names work?

A clan name marks the kin group a dwarf belongs to and usually follows "of Clan". Craft surnames are a second habit: they record a trade or a deed. Choose Clan name only under More options to list clans by themselves.

Can I use these dwarf names?

Yes, freely, in stories, campaigns, games and commercial projects. We claim no rights in generated names; just check trademarks before naming a product after one.

Why is it called a dwarven name generator?

"Dwarven" is what most people search for and what most settings call the culture, so the page uses it. The names suit any dwarf, from a tabletop hero to a novel's miner.
