How to use the tiefling name generator
- Tap Generate for a mix of infernal names and virtue names, each with a family name.
- Set Style to Infernal or Virtue, and Gender to feminine, masculine or neutral (virtue names suit anyone).
- Under More options, drop the family name, list family names alone, or pick a length and a first letter.
- Tap ☆ on the names you like; your favourites follow you to every other generator on the site.
Two kinds of tiefling name
Tieflings carry a fiendish bloodline, and their names tend to show which way they have decided to face it. Some keep a name in the old infernal manner: classical in shape, a little sinister in sound. Others give themselves a virtue name, a single word for the person they mean to become, and wear it like a promise or a dare.
This generator does both. Infernal names come from our own syllable grammar, built around ae, th, x and z with endings such as -ia and -essa for feminine names, -os and -eus for masculine ones, and -ix or -yr for neutral ones. The list on this page starts with Promise of the Crimson Spire. Virtue names come from a list of more than ninety abstract English words we chose ourselves, from Amity and Cadence to Threnody and Vigilance.
How infernal names are built
Each infernal name is a beginning, an optional middle syllable (two when you set Length to long) and an ending. The rules keep the sound sharp but readable: th, x, z and ae may each appear only once, two of the same vowel never meet, and at most two vowels stand together, so you won't get a tangle like Zethaexae. Stress usually falls on the second-to-last syllable, and every invented name comes with a hint for saying it.
The table below shows the parts the grammar draws from, with names built from them by the same rules the tool uses.
Family names and virtue names
Family names come in three forms: a dark compound (an ash, ember or raven word joined to a second word), of House followed by an invented infernal name, or of the plus a quarter of a city, the kind of place a tiefling family might end up when the rest of town keeps its distance. A virtue name can take a family name too, which gives combinations such as Mercy Ashgrave that tell a story on their own. We deliberately left out the virtue names printed in the rulebooks; every word on our list was picked by us.
How tiefling names are built
| Part | Examples from the grammar | Names built from them |
|---|---|---|
| Infernal beginnings | Lev-, Ori-, Sae-, Xar-, Bry-, Ixi- | Levena, Oriena, Saena |

| Infernal masculine endings | -ion, -or, -ael, -os, -ek, -eus | Nemion, Belor, Nemael |
| Infernal neutral endings | -ai, -ael, -en, -yr, -un, -or | Belai, Nemael, Belen |
| Virtue names | Solace, Candor, Hush, Mirth, Rapture, Riddle, Valor, Wonder | Used whole, as a given name; any gender |
| Surname parts | Ash, Grave, Thorn, Smoke, Ink + grave, veil, tongue, horn, thorn | Emberfire, of House Maleon, of the Brass Quarter |
Every example is built at build time by the generator's own rules (seams, banned clusters, length, blocklist), so this table always matches what the tool produces.

Choosing between infernal and virtue
- Let the name show a decision. A tiefling who kept the name their family gave them has made peace with it, or never had the choice. One who took a virtue name walked away from something. Both are backstories.
- Pick a virtue with a crack in it. Mercy is lovely; a character called Mercy who struggles to forgive anyone is better. Wrath, Penance and Remorse hint at the opposite: someone owning a dark part of themselves.
- Give the family name a history. A house name suggests old blood and pride. A city-quarter name suggests a family that was pushed to the edge of town.
At the table
Virtue names are easy for players to remember and great for a quick non-player character: the innkeeper called Patience, the guard captain called Resolve. Infernal names deserve a moment at introduction. Read out the pronunciation hint once and the group will settle on it. If a player wants a nickname for a long infernal name, let another character choose it; who gets to use the short form says a lot about a relationship.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good tiefling name?
Either an infernal name that sounds old and a little dangerous, such as Devotion Cinderward or Zaria of House Irriys from this page's list, or a virtue name that says what the character wants to be. Choose the style that matches their story.
What are tiefling virtue names?
A virtue name is a single word, usually an idea or a feeling, that a tiefling takes for themselves: Clarity, Resolve, Threnody, Mercy. Set Style to Virtue to see only those. Our list is our own and doesn't reuse the names printed in rulebooks.
Do tieflings have last names?
Many do, and this generator adds one by default: a dark compound, a house name or a city quarter. Some tieflings drop their family name altogether; choose First name only under More options for that.
Can I use these tiefling names?
Yes. They are free for your campaign, novel, game or any commercial project, with no credit needed, and we claim no rights in them. If you plan to name a product or brand, run a quick trademark search first.
Where do tieflings come from?
Tieflings are one of the nine species in the SRD 5.2, the open rules text released under CC-BY-4.0 (see our About page). The idea of a mortal with a fiend somewhere in the family tree is much older, and works in almost any dark fantasy setting.
