How to use the fantasy last name generator

  1. Pick a culture: Elven, Dwarven, Orcish, Human, Halfling, Gnomish, Fae or Infernal.
  2. Pick a form: a compound name, a clan, a noble house or a place of origin. On Any, each name says which form it is.
  3. Tap Generate for a new list, and Back to return to the previous one.
  4. Star the surnames you like; they wait in your favourites next to the given names from the other generators.

Four ways to build a fantasy surname

Real surnames grew from four habits, and fantasy surnames work best when they follow the same logic.

  1. Compound names join an epithet to an element, and usually record a trade, a landscape or a deed: a stone word and a craft word for a dwarf, a hedgerow word and a light word for a fae.
  2. Clan names belong to a kin group rather than a household, so they are worn with pride and often with "of": of Clan …, of the ….
  3. House names mark nobility. A house name is old, often invented-sounding, and the family's wealth hangs on it.
  4. Places of origin name where a family came from, which says something about every member: a family named for a river crossing came from somewhere ordinary, a family named for a mountain hold did not.

This page's list starts with of the Ashen Coven, of the Cloud Watch and of Willow Hall.

Surnames by culture

  • Elven families take nature compounds or an "of House" name made from elvish-sounding syllables.
  • Dwarven clans join stone and metal to craft and body words, or carry an invented clan name.
  • Orcish names are deed-names earned in battle, or clan epithets built from an adjective and a noun.
  • Human surnames are English-style place and nickname surnames, plus noble houses.
  • Halfling families have comfortable country compounds, all hearth and harvest.
  • Gnomish families are named like workshops, often with a nickname in front.
  • Fae surnames come from the hedgerow, and their courts from seasons and plants.
  • Infernal surnames are made of ash, smoke and bad bargains.

One surname data set, every generator

The surnames here are the same ones the race generators and the fantasy name generator use, so a family name you find here will match the given names generated on those pages. Every slot value is limited per list (the same element at most twice in ten names), so you won't see the same first half three times in a row.

Tips for writers

  • Give the family a history. Ask how they got the name. A compound name says an ancestor did something; a place name says they moved; a house name says someone, long ago, won.
  • Match the form to the class. Farmers and smiths carry trade and place names; nobles carry houses; outcasts may have lost their surname entirely, which is a story in itself.
  • Let names change. Marriage, exile and fame all change surnames. A character who drops their house name, or earns a new one, gives you a scene.

For game masters

A surname is the fastest way to tie a non-player character to your world. Decide two or three great houses and a few clans for each region, generate them here, and reuse them. When a player meets a stranger who shares a surname with a villain, the table will lean in.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good fantasy last name?

One that tells you something about the family: what they did, where they came from or whom they serve. A good last name also sounds like the given names of the same culture. From this page, Larklight and of the Wild Branch show two different forms.

How do fantasy families get their surnames?

Usually the same way real families did: from a trade, a place, a parent's name, a nickname or a noble house. Choosing the form first, then the culture, gives you a surname with a built-in backstory.

Can a character have more than one surname?

Yes. Nobles often carry a house name and a place ("of House … of …"), and many cultures add a clan to a family name. Generate one of each form and combine them.

Can I use these surnames for my characters?

Yes, in any project, commercial or not, at no cost. The names are generated and we claim no rights in them. A brand or product name should still be checked against trademark registers first.

Do these surnames match the other generators?

Yes. The elf, dwarf, orc and fantasy pages draw their surnames from the same data, so a family name from this page fits names generated there.
