Three styles. Fantasy joins two sea-words. Pirate names use an invented owner. Sci-fi uses a hull code we made up, not a navy's.

How to use the ship name generator

  1. Tap Generate. Fantasy names are one word (Wave plus breaker, and the like). Pirate names are an owner's plus a deed. Sci-fi names are a three-letter code, a call-name and a number.
  2. Lock Style when the whole fleet shares a culture. Leave it on Any for a harbour that has all three.
  3. A first letter is under More options.
  4. Star the ship that will matter. The name is stored with your other favourites.

A ship is called by its name

People hail a ship. The name has to survive being shouted, painted on a stern and written in a log. This page opens with LOK Ornix-2.

Fantasy names join a sea-word to a craft-word: wave, storm, tide, keel, warden, and others we listed. Pirate names are someone's deed, and the someone is invented here, not a historical captain and not a character from a film. Sci-fi names look like a registry entry, ISV Veyra-9 and its cousins, using hull codes we chose because they are not a real navy's prefix. USS, HMS and RMS are not used. Real ships and famous fictional ones are blocked.

Three fleets

  • Fantasy. One compound word. It suits galleys, cogs and anything that would have a figurehead. Keep a whole navy inside this style if they share a language.
  • Pirate. An owner and a deed: Revenge, Fortune, Bargain, Folly, and the rest of a short list that is about luck and debt, not about a real war. The owner is two invented names. If you need the captain as a person, generate them on the character page and only then decide whether the ship wears their name.
  • Sci-fi. Code, call-name, number. The code is the institution (a line, a company, a navy you invented). The call-name is what the crew says. The number is the hull. In dialogue, use the call-name. In a distress call, use the whole string.

A port scene can mix them: a compound-word trader, a pirate prize under a new name, a registry hull that nobody loves. Do not mix them inside one navy.

Renaming and prizes

Ships change names when they change owners. Generate two and decide which was painted over. The old name is a secret or a scar; the new one is what the harbour master writes down.

Do not use a real disaster, a real warship or a film's hero ship. The block list holds the famous ones. If you are writing near history, look the name up anyway. A generator is not an admiralty.

In a story

  • The crew shorten it. Wavebreaker becomes the Breaker. Write the short form once so you stay consistent.
  • The deed should be slightly true. A ship called Bargain should have cost someone something.
  • Numbers are for the institution. Characters under fire do not say the hyphen.

At the table

Name the ship the players will sail, plus two they will see and one they will be chased by. Four names is a harbour. Twenty names is a shipping register: keep it in your notes, not in the opening description.

Frequently asked questions

How do you name a fantasy ship?

Join a word for the sea to a word for the work: a breaker, a keel, a warden. Set Style to Fantasy. Mara Voss's Prize is the shape. One navy, one style.

How do pirate ship names work here?

An invented owner plus a deed, as in a bargain, a folly or a revenge. The owners are not historical captains. Set Style to Pirate for a whole list of that shape.

What does the sci-fi code mean?

Nothing official. ISV, NRV, CSV and the other codes are labels we invented so the name looks registered. They are not a real fleet. Use the call-name when people talk and the full code when a log would.

Can I use these ship names?

Yes. They are free for stories, games and commercial projects, and you do not owe us a credit. We claim no rights in them. Check trademarks if you are naming a product, and do not reuse a real ship or a famous fictional one.

Will I get a real ship's name?

The lists avoid real navy prefixes and the generator rejects famous ships. A coincidence with a small modern boat is still possible, because no list is every hull on earth. Look it up if you are publishing.
