Export list

Each demon gets a rank, a title or a place in the underworld. Choose a style, or keep greater, lesser and fallen mixed.

How to use the demon name generator

  1. Tap Generate for a list of demons, each with a rank (Herald of Broken Oaths), a title (the Unbidden) or an underworld place.
  2. Pick a Style: Greater for grand, classical names, Lesser for small, spiky imps, Fallen for dark names with an angelic ring.
  3. Under More options, show bare names, list ranks and titles alone, or choose a gender, length or first letter.
  4. Star the names you want to keep; the favourites drawer works on every generator.

Names with weight

In folklore a demon's name is power: whoever knows it can summon, bind or bargain. That is why a good demon name feels a little dangerous to say aloud, classical in shape and wrong in sound. The list on this page starts with Aelyr the Patient, said AY-lir.

Our names come from the infernal syllable grammar we wrote for the site, extended for this page. They are invented, not taken from scripture, grimoires, novels, films or games, and the named demons of all of those are on our block list.

Greater, lesser and fallen

  • Greater demons get the full infernal grammar: z, x, ph and th, with long endings such as -agoth, -iax and -uzeth. These are the lords and dukes of the pit.
  • Lesser demons are imps and errand-runners. Their names are short and spiky (Snix-, Vrik-, Gnib-) with endings like -ix, -ub and -etta: easy to shout, easy to forget, which suits them.
  • Fallen names keep an echo of the heavens they left, in endings such as -iel, -ael and -riel. We never produce the names of archangels or of the angels and watchers named in old texts.

The grammar forbids clumsy runs of vowels, uses each harsh group once and caps the length, so a name stays sayable even when it is meant to sound alien.

Ranks, titles and places

Demons in stories are bureaucrats as often as monsters, so a rank follows the name after a comma: Warden of Old Grudges, Tallyman of Sour Milk, Collector of Unpaid Debts. A title describes a manner (the Soft-Spoken, the Ever-Hungry), and a place gives an address in the underworld: of the Seventh Cellar, of the Burning Throne. Each form appears on at most four names in ten.

Writing demons

  • Decide what the name costs. If speaking a demon's true name binds it, characters will guard it, trade it or trick each other into saying it. Give the demon a public title for everyday use.
  • Use the rank for character. A demon called Keeper of Lost Keys has a job, a sense of humour or a grudge. Readers will wonder which.
  • Make imps funny, not harmless. A small name like Gnibiz invites laughter; let the reader stop laughing a few pages later.

At the table

Bargains with demons are some of the best scenes a game can have. Give the demon a short name the players can use and a long rank it insists on. If a player character makes a pact, let the demon's title change with each favour granted: the Courteous becomes the Collector. Keep a list of lesser demons for the moment a summoning goes slightly wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good demon name?

A name with a classical shape and a sinister sound, often with z, x or th: Zigynn of the Bleeding Court and Arveriel the Horned from this page's list are two examples. Add a rank or a title to say what the demon does.

What is the difference between greater and lesser demons?

In most stories greater demons are lords with domains and followers, while lesser demons (imps) serve them, run errands and cause small disasters. Our greater names are long and grand; lesser names are short and spiky.

Are these real demon names?

No. Every name is invented by our grammar. Demons named in religious texts, old grimoires, novels, films and games are on our block list, so the generator never hands you one, and we avoid the names of angels too.

Can I use these demon names?

Yes, for any story, game, campaign or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check a trademark register before naming a product after one.

How do I name a fallen angel?

Set Style to Fallen. Those names keep an angelic ending such as -iel or -ael but begin darker, and none of them is the name of a known angel.
