Capitals take a civic ending or a crown. Ports take a harbour word. Fantasy cities are a single invented word.
How to use the city name generator
- Tap Generate. Capital names are one civic word, or High …, or … Crown. Port names mention the water. Fantasy names are a single invented word.
- Leave Kind on Any for a skyline of all three, or lock it to the city you are drawing.
- A first letter is under More options.
- Save a name with the star. It stays in your favourites on the other generators.
A city has to be announced
A village name can be modest. A city name is said by heralds, painted on gates and argued over in treaties. It should be easy to hear across a square and hard to confuse with the villages around it. The list here opens with Vessara Docks.
Capitals and ports on this page start from invented roots, then add a word that says what the city is for: a gate, a spire, a crown, a harbour, a quay. Fantasy cities skip the English word and join two invented pieces, so the name does not exist in a gazetteer. Real cities and canon cities from novels and games are on the block list.
Three kinds of city
- Capital. The root takes a civic ending (-gate, -spire, -hold, -watch and others), or the name is High … or … Crown. Use these for seats of government, temple cities and fortress-capitals.
- Port. Port …, or the root plus Harbour, Quay, Docks, Wharf or Landing. A port should sound wet. Do not give an inland capital a quay unless the river is the point of the story.
- Fantasy. One word, built from two pieces we wrote, with no English place-ending. Use it when the city is old, foreign to the viewpoint culture, or simply not meant to sound like a translated English town.
A coast needs both: a fantasy or capital name for the old city on the cliff, and a port name for the new docks below it. They can share a root (Veltha above, Port Veltha below) if you pick the root and reuse it. The generator will not do that pairing for you.
What not to borrow
Famous cities from other people's worlds are rejected, and so are real ones. That still leaves a duty on you: if a name makes every reader think of one book, do not use it, even if the letters differ by one. The block list catches the well-known forms. It cannot catch a private joke.
Pair a city with the towns that feed it and the kingdom that claims it. A capital called a village ending (-thwaite, -combe) will feel like the countryside grew a wall, which is a fine story if you mean it and a mistake if you do not.
How city names are built
| Kind | How a name is built | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Capital | An invented root plus a civic ending, or High …, or … Crown | Nimbrabast, Kirrapeak, High Ashara, Evvafall |
| Port | Port …, or the root plus Harbour, Quay, Docks, Wharf or Landing | Port Vira, Quella Landing, Zumira Wharf, Syla Wharf |
| Fantasy | Two invented pieces joined into one word | Syladreth, Yssamere, Iranath, Oramere |
Examples come from the generator, so a blocked real city never appears in the table either.

On the page
- Say the name in dialogue before you describe the walls. If a character can say it once and be understood, the reader can too.
- Give the port and the citadel different shapes. Docks sound like work. Crowns and spires sound like power.
- One unusual city is enough. If every city on the continent is a single invented word, none of them feel foreign.
For a campaign map
Label three cities before you label thirty towns: the capital, the rival port, and one city the players will actually enter. Generate a short list, star two candidates for each, and decide in the margin why one lost. That reason is a hook.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a good fantasy city name?
It should be sayable in one breath and different from the towns around it. A capital wants a civic ending or a crown; a port wants a harbour word; a city outside that tradition wants one invented word. Gillawall is one example from this list.
How do you name a port city?
Set Kind to Port. You get Port plus a root, or the root plus Harbour, Quay, Docks, Wharf or Landing. Keep the inland capital on the Capital setting so the two do not sound identical.
Will this generate a real city?
It is written not to. Roots are ours, and the generator refuses a name that matches a real city or a famous fictional one on our list. Very small places can still slip through a finite list, so look once if the name feels familiar.
Can I use these city names?
Yes, in fiction, games and commercial work, free of charge and without naming us. We do not own the output. Check a trademark register before you use a name as a brand, and check you are not describing a real city by mistake.
How many cities should a kingdom have?
For a story, one capital and one rival are often enough. For a game map, three cities the players can walk into, plus towns along the roads between them. Name the realm on the kingdom generator so the political name and the city name are not the same word.
