Human names that feel familiar but not real

Humans are the hardest people to name in fantasy. Real names break the spell (nobody believes in a sword-saint called Kevin), but names that sound too alien stop feeling human. Our human grammar sits in between: its parts are shaped like the building blocks of real European names without copying any real list, so the results feel lived-in and new at the same time. A real name can turn up by chance, and that is fine. This page's list starts with Darow Tideholm, said DAH-row.

Three regions

  • Northern names have a Germanic or Norse feel, with hard beginnings (Sig-, Hrol-, Wulf-, Ead-) and endings such as -ric, -mund, -hild and -wyn. Families carry English-style place names, clan names or the name of a village.
  • Southern names sound Mediterranean, with open vowels and endings such as -ius, -ian, -ella and -ina. Southern families favour noble houses (of House plus an invented name) and towns.
  • Coastal names have a Celtic lilt, with -wen, -enna, -ec and -ow, and family names that smell of salt: compounds of tide, gull, kelp or brine with a strand, a holm or a mouth.

Give each nation or province in your world one region's sound and keep to it. Readers will start to place characters by their names before you tell them where anyone is from.

Family names

Human family names come in five forms here: an English-style compound (Hartwell, Blackmere), of plus an invented town, of House plus a noble name, of Clan plus the same, and the coastal compounds. Each region uses its own three forms, and no single form takes more than four names in ten, so a list never turns into a parade of of Somewhere. The table below shows the parts each region uses.

Naming humans in a fantasy world

  • Humans are the baseline. Elves, dwarves and orcs sound exotic partly because humans sound ordinary next to them. Keep human names simple and the other peoples stand out.
  • Use region to show class and travel. A southern name in a northern court marks a foreigner, a diplomat or an heir with a complicated family.
  • Mind the real world. If a generated name happens to belong to a famous real person, pick another. Search any name you plan to use for a main character.

At the table

Human non-player characters fill most of a campaign, so it helps to have names ready. Keep a short list for each region in your notes, sorted by gender, and tick names off as you use them. When players travel, switch regions and the change of sound does half the work of describing the new country.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good fantasy human name?

One that sounds human but not modern: two syllables, a familiar shape and an unfamiliar detail. From this page's list, Eadea Ridgebury and Branfrid of Corhaven are two examples. Pick a region to match your setting.

How do I name humans in my fantasy world?

Give each region its own sound, keep names short enough to repeat, and avoid modern everyday names. Generate a list for each region here, then keep the ones that feel like they belong together.

What is the difference between the regions?

Northern names are hard and Germanic in feel, southern names open and Mediterranean, coastal names soft and Celtic. Each also has its own family names, from noble houses in the south to tide-and-gull compounds on the coast.

Can I use these human names?

Yes. Use them in any book, game or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names. A generated name can match a real person's name by chance, so check before using one for a brand.

Are these real names?

No. They are generated from our own name parts, shaped like European names, so some may happen to match real names. That is by design: human names in fantasy should sound possible.
