How to use the elf name generator

  1. Tap Generate for a mixed list of high, wood and dark elf names.
  2. Pick a style and a gender (feminine, masculine or neutral) to narrow it down.
  3. Under More options, choose first names only or family names only, a length, or the first letter.
  4. Star the names you like; each comes with a pronunciation hint you can copy to your notes.

Elven naming conventions

Elves in most fantasy settings live for centuries, and their names sound like it: long, liquid and unhurried. Our elf grammar builds names from soft beginnings (Ae-, Sae-, Ela-, Syl-), flowing middles (-la-, -ri-, -tha-) and endings that carry the gender: -iel, -wyn and -essa for feminine names, -ion, -as and -orn for masculine ones, and endings such as -yn and -ae for neutral names.

Paired vowels such as ae and ia give elven names their sound, but two of the same vowel never meet at a join, th appears only once per name, and no more than two vowels stand together. Stress usually falls on the third syllable from the end: this page's list opens with Talev Ironthorn, said TAH-lev.

High, wood and dark elves

  • High elves have the longest names, rich in vowel pairs and soft consonants. They often belong to an old house, and their family name says so.
  • Wood elves have shorter, earthier names with w, f and v sounds, and family names taken from groves, glades and the creatures around them.
  • Dark elves have sharper names with z, x, sh and endings such as -yss and -ith, and family names from shadow, silk and venom.

The styles are a starting point. Plenty of settings mix them, and a wood elf raised at a high-elf court might well carry a high-elf name.

Elven family names

Elves take three kinds of family name here: a nature compound (a moon, star or willow word joined to a softer element), of House followed by an invented elvish name for noble lines, and a grove or place name for wood elves. Dark elves carry their own darker compounds or house names. The Fantasy Last Name Generator has more forms if you need a whole family tree.

Tips for writing elves

  • Give long names a short use-name. A five-syllable name is beautiful once and tiring by chapter three. Let friends use the first two syllables, and save the full name for formal scenes.
  • One sound palette per elven nation. If your coastal elves favour ae and l, and your mountain elves th and r, readers will recognise a stranger's origin from the name alone.
  • Avoid famous elves. Readers know the elves of the best-known novels and games. Our generator blocks those names and their tell-tale fragments, but check any name you choose by searching it.

At the table

Elven names are the ones players most often mangle. Give the pronunciation hint once, out loud, at the start, and let the group agree on a short form. A name the whole table can say is worth more than a perfect one only you can pronounce.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cool elf name?

Short elf names with a clear stress feel striking, long ones feel noble. From this page's list, Fenir of Ravenwood and Aeliar Duskwing are two very different examples. Try the dark style for something sharper.

What are some good female elf names?

Feminine elf names here end in -iel, -wyn, -essa, -ara and similar endings. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female elf names in the lists below, all generated by the same rules.

How do elves get their names?

It depends on the setting. Many writers give elves a childhood name and an adult name chosen later, or a family name tied to an old house or a grove. The generator gives you the sounds; you decide the custom.

Can I use these elf names?

Yes, for your novel, campaign, game or anything else, including commercial work, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names. Check trademarks before using one as a product name.

Are these elf names taken from books or games?

No. Our syllables are our own, and every name is checked against a list of famous elves from books and games, which are never shown. Name parts that would point at a famous character are blocked as well.
