Dark elves, from a Norse note to a naming system
The oldest written dark elves are not a game people. In the Prose Edda, Snorri Sturluson has High name two elven kinds. The ljósálfar, the light elves, live in Álfheimr. The dökkálfar, the dark elves, live down in the earth, unlike the light elves in looks and still more in nature. Brodeur's 1916 translation puts it in one pair of lines: the light elves are fairer to look upon than the sun, and the dark elves are blacker than pitch. Snorri gives no personal names. The passage is under Sources.
Every syllable on this page is ours. Lighter elves, in high, wood and dark styles, are on the elf name generator.
Shadow, ember and nightborn
A name is a beginning, sometimes a middle, and an ending for gender. Stress falls just before the last syllable: Lyssoth the Patient is said LIS-soth. Two vowels may stand together, never three, and th appears once at most.
- Shadow is sleek and sibilant, built on s and sh. Feminine names lean to -ine, -isse and -aela; masculine names to -ael, -ion and -yth.
- Ember is warmer. Z and v sit beside open a and o, coals rather than silk. Endings such as -aza and -yzen belong here.
- Nightborn uses n, m, l and y, and stays soft, a name said quietly.
One style per house is enough. A second style marks someone the house took in.
House names and epithets
Each dark elf here carries one extra name, never two. A house is House of plus an invented word of five to seven letters, from a small grammar of its own. A compound is the other family form: two words of ours joined, a wick, pearl or clove against silk, veil, moss or thorn. An epithet is the plus one word, such as the Unlit or the Seventh. It marks a person, not a family, so it never follows House of. If a story needs both, speak the epithet and write the house.
The lists below split the pieces: feminine given names, masculine given names, and house names alone. The opening name on this page is Lyssoth the Patient.

For characters
- Let the house outlast the person. Generate it once and reuse it for siblings, a parent and a cousin. Given names may change style. The house should not.
- Save the epithet for a deed. the Seventh means more once the reader learns why. Until then the house is enough.
- Read it aloud. Shadow wants a soft s. Ember wants the z heard. If you stumble, take a shorter name. Search a name before you publish it.
For the table
Name the house first. Three given names in one style, all House of the same word, and the table hears a family. Give an envoy an epithet and hold the house back until they earn it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good dark elf name?
A short given name with a clear stress, plus either a house or a one-word epithet. From this page, Sereyn the Starless and Myssyne House of Myrrin are two different styles. Shadow hisses, ember is warmer, nightborn stays soft.
What are some female dark elf names?
Set Gender to Feminine. Shadow names often end in -ine, -isse or -aela, ember names in -yne or -aza, nightborn names in -eth, -irae or -eira. The feminine list below is the same generator with the gender fixed.
How do dark elf house names work?
Two ways. House of plus an invented word, or two original words joined, such as a metal or a plant set against silk, veil or thorn. Choose House names only under More options to list them without given names. An epithet replaces the house; it does not follow it.
Can I use these names?
Yes. Use them in a story, a game, a campaign or any other project, including commercial work, free and without credit. The names are generated and we claim no rights in them. Check trademarks before you use one as a product name.
Are these names from a game?
No. They are made by rules we wrote, from syllables and house-words that are ours. They are free for any use. Check trademarks before you use a name as a product name. Famous dark-elf names from books and games are blocked, so the generator will not hand you one.
Where do dark elves come from?
As a phrase, from medieval Norse writing. Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, in the section called Gylfaginning, speaks of dark elves, dökkálfar, who live in the earth and differ from the light elves of Álfheimr. Brodeur's 1916 translation is linked under Sources. The names on this page are not from that book. Snorri names the people and does not name the persons. We made the naming rules.
