Each goblin gets a deed-name, an unflattering title or a tribe. Pick a style, or keep them mixed.
How to use the goblin name generator
- Tap Generate for a crowd of goblins, each with a deed-name, a title or a tribe.
- Pick the sneaky style for thin, hissing names or grubby for round, muddy ones.
- Under More options, show bare names, list the bynames alone, or choose a length or first letter.
- Need a whole warren? Set the count to 50 and star the best.
Small, quick and a little grim
Goblins have lurked at the edge of European folklore for centuries: small, quick, greedy, sometimes funny and sometimes frightening. Their names should be the same. Ours are short (three to eight letters), with a sharp beginning and an ending that clicks or squelches, and they are stressed on the first beat, so you can shout one across a cave. The list on this page begins with Swibb of the Bent Ditch, said swib.
The goblin is a creature of shared folklore, not of any one game, so every syllable here is our own and well-known goblins from books, films and games are blocked.
Sneaky and grubby
- Sneaky goblins have thin, hissing names with s, k, z and x: the scouts, thieves and lookouts. Their endings, -kkit, -zzik or -bbet, sound like something scuttling.
- Grubby goblins have round, muddy names with b, d, g and m: the diggers, cooks and hoarders. Their endings, -bbins, -dge or -mble, sound like something being stirred.
Each name can carry one doubled consonant per pair (one kk, one zz), never three letters in a row, and no part twice, so a crowd of goblins stays easy to tell apart.
Deed-names, titles and tribes
Goblins rarely get a family name. They get a reputation instead, in one of three forms: a deed-name for what they are known to steal, chew or find (Candlethief, Bonepicker, Spoonsnatcher), a title that other goblins gave them and they wear with pride anyway (the Damp, the Thrice-Bitten), or a tribe named after something battered in the warren (of the Bent Nail, of the Leaking Bucket). No form takes more than four names in ten, so a list mixes all three.

Writing goblins
- Give them one human detail. A goblin who is proud of a title everyone else finds insulting is funny once and touching the second time.
- Grim and comic can share a scene. A tribe called of the Grinning Moon sounds playful until the players find out why it grins.
- Make the deed-name true. If a goblin is called Spoonsnatcher, a spoon should go missing. Players love it when a name keeps its promise.
At the table
Goblins are often the first enemies a party meets, which makes them the best place to show that your world has character. Name the boss and two lieutenants with titles, give the rest bare names, and let a captured goblin introduce everyone at great length. Players will remember the goblin who wouldn't stop talking long after they forget the treasure.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good goblin name?
Short, sharp and a little silly, with something grim underneath. From this page's list, Zobiffit of the Gnawed Boot and Kigakka the Lesser are two examples. Switch between sneaky and grubby to change the sound.
What are some female goblin names?
Feminine goblin names here end in -kka, -bba, -zza, -bbet or -ggie. Set Gender to Feminine, or browse the female goblin names in the lists below.
How do I name a goblin tribe?
Name it after an object the tribe treasures or a place it lives in, preferably a battered one: of the Bent Nail, of the Dripping Cellar. Choose Bynames only under More options for a list of tribes, titles and deed-names.
Can I use these goblin names?
Yes, in any game, story or commercial project, free and without credit. We claim no rights in generated names; check a trademark register before naming a product after one.
Are these goblins from a particular game or film?
No. Goblins belong to old European folklore, and our names, titles and tribes are written by us. Famous goblins from books, films and games are on our block list, so the generator never hands you one.
