How to use the half-elf name generator
- Tap Generate for half-elf names; the note under each name says which side it comes from.
- Set Given name to Elven, Human or Blended to get one kind only.
- Choose a gender, and under More options drop the family name or list family names alone.
- Star the names you like and copy the pronunciation hint for your notes.
A name from two worlds
A half-elf's name usually tells you who raised them. A child brought up among elves gets a long, flowing elven name; one raised in a human town gets a human one. Either way, the other parent often survives in the family name. This generator follows that idea, and every name in a mixed list carries a short note:
- Elven + human: an elven given name with a human family name, for half-elves raised among elves.
- Human + elven: a human given name with an elven family name, for half-elves raised among humans.
- Blended: a given name that is itself half and half, with a family name from either side.
This page's list opens with Breorn Elmcombe (Elven + human).
How the blend works
The blended names come from a grammar we built out of our own elf and human grammars. Half of it takes a human beginning and an elven ending: Hal- with -iel, Bran- with -wyn, Mar- with -ion. The other half takes an elven beginning and a human ending: Syl- with -mund, Cael- with -wen, Ela- with -ric. The seams follow the rules of both sides: no doubled vowels at a join, th and ae at most once, never more than two vowels together. The result sounds like a name a half-elf might be given by parents who each wanted to see themselves in it.
Elven names on this page use the high and wood styles of our elf grammar, and human names use all three human regions. The table below shows the parts and some examples of each kind.
Family names
Family names come from the other parent. A half-elf with an elven given name takes a human family name (Hartwell, of Ravenford, of House Morence), and one with a human given name takes an elven one (Starbloom, of the Silver Grove, of House Taelyrin). Blended names can go either way. Choose Family name only to see both kinds side by side.
How half-elf names are put together
| Given name | Family name | Parts | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elven (our elf grammar) | Human | Elven given name + a human family name | Elaeron of House Aldard, Sora Hollinholt, Vania Coldcombe |
| Human (our human grammar) | Elven | Human given name + an elven family name | Berwin of the Amber Circle, Dagwiel of House Faereith, Mornear of Amberdell |
| Blended: human beginning | Either | Al-, Cal-, Hal-, Nor-, Wil- + elven endings -iel, -ith, -essa, -ea, -aleth | Dunae, Geris, Noryra |
| Blended: elven beginning | Either | Ael-, Ela-, Fae-, Lia-, Ori- + human endings -wen, -lind, -ella, -eda, -ys | Shaelwen, Anaeda, Selbert |
Examples are generated at build time with fixed seeds by this page's own generator, so they follow the same rules as the tool.

Writing half-elves
- Decide who chose the name. A blended name suggests two parents who agreed; an elven name and a human surname suggest one parent who left. The name is the first line of the backstory.
- Use two names for two worlds. Many half-elves would answer to an elven name at home and a shortened human one in town. Let the reader see both.
- Don't overdo the elf. A very long elven name on a character who lives among humans will be cut down by everyone around them. Decide what they call themselves.
At the table
Half-elf players often struggle to pick between an elven and a human name. Generate a mixed list, read the notes and ask which side of the family the character feels closer to. If the answer is "neither", the blended names were made for them.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good half-elf name?
One that hints at both parents. From this page's list, Valow Hartfield and Ilfair of Brinminster are two different takes. Set Given name to Blended for names that are half elven and half human by construction.
Do half-elves use elven or human names?
Either, usually depending on who raised them, and many use one name at home and another outside. This generator offers both, plus blended names, and gives each name a family name from the other side.
What are some female half-elf names?
Set Gender to Feminine: blended names end in -iel, -wyn, -wen or -hild, elven names in -iel, -ia or -essa, human names in -hild, -wen, -ella and more. Browse the female names below for a quick list.
Can I use these half-elf names?
Yes, freely, in stories, campaigns, games and commercial work, without credit. We claim no rights in generated names. Check trademarks before using one as a product or brand name.
Is the half-elf in the open rules?
The half-elf appears in the SRD 5.1, an earlier version of the open rules text released under CC-BY-4.0 (it was left out of the SRD 5.2). We use only the idea of the people; the names and text are ours. The attribution is on our About page.
